War is peace, Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is strength.
Those who control the present control the past, and those who control the past control the future.
One important idea in Orwell's story was how powerful can curating information at scale be. Those who have the power to manipulate the information people consume have the power to manipulate what they believe in. A carefully crafted narrative about the allegedly hostile intentions of the enemy state can instill people fear, anger, and urge for violence. What this really implies is that people who are in charge of the sources of knowledge and facts can just as well shape those in their own favor - history books, news, newspapers, or even authors themselves. And if the historical narratives are presented as the powerful intended, it makes sense that the future is apt to be influenced accordingly.
On a broaded note, 1984 is a fascinating tale of love, our inherent desire for freedom - freedom of thought, expression, action, and feeling - and human will and power to attain this freedom.
